Wrapping First Year Up

This week during our TRAIN class our assignment was to create a Mind Set SMART goals. SMART is an acronym that can help you guide your goal setting. S pecific (simple, sensible, significant). M easurable (meaningful, motivating). A chievable (agreed, attainable). R elevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based). T ime bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive). This is how I used this method for one of my goals.  S - Since MidWestern University is a Med-School Enrollment does begin early. I have made it a goal to enroll this month of April 2020, send in my paperwork and study all 2019 to take my Optometry Admission Test (OAT) 2020. This goal is important because it has always been a dream of mine to be a doctor , especially in an area that has significant meaning to me. My dad is my inspiration for me wanting to go into optometry because he has for years suffered with glaucoma and my want to understand what he is having issues wi...

Road Trip to South Mountain Community College

This week for our class we were assigned to create a  3-5 minute presentation about generally anything relating to school. I decided to write about the importance of networking and how it comes a long way in life.  I began with a story of how I got to where I am through networking. When I was a junior at Metro Tech High School I decided to take Physics class, knowing I did not need it. During lectures, Mr. Chapman would mention of Summer STEM which was  3 month program organized for high school graduates who were interested in STEM majors. I decided to take advantage of that opportunity and sign up. Without realizing it Mr. Chapman’s wife is the STEM coordinator and decides who is granted the Scholarship. So because of that connection and the good word that Mr. Chapman put in for me I was accepted into the Summer STEM program.  During my 3 month work period I worked with Joshua James who was my mentor during the moment and worked on the purification of ...

Mindset and Oneself

During this week of class lecture we have begun discussing a mindset type of book that focuses on grown and fixed mindset of people and how they can be changed over more developed over time. In this book,  Carol Dweck illustrates the differences between a growth and fixed mindset. She quotes   “ In a fixed  mindset , people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort.” . In order to tie the book to the class, we looked at strategies used in previous experiences and how they can be incorporated into a new learning challenge. In other terms to put it a fixed mindset person would say "They were just naturally born smart" believing that people's mind is set on only one point of view and wouldn't change. On the other hand, growth mindset is described as "S tud...

First Semesters Almost Done

Image
About a week more until I reach only having one more month left to finish up my first semester at ASU. It’s crazy how time flies especially this college year around. I feel like time flew faster at ASU than my two years at Phoenix College. I also feel like I’ve had less relaxation time at ASU than my time at P.C. My first semester at ASU so far has been kind of drowning because this is the time where I feel like I have to start planning my career path and looking into what medical schools and licensing careers I want to try and get into. This semester has been a lot of just trying to keep up with all the homework assignment and exams and quizzes that some professors will throw at the students as a surprise. I have definitely made new friends who in my calculus class have helped me a lot and always make class a little more tolerable. I do miss a couple of things from P.C like my past professors and especially Dr. Cotter who made class always a delight to come to. I am still currently w...

I'm back !

Hey everyone I hope you are all doing well and have been having a good semester so far. I miss Phoenix college so much and everyone who was involved in the stem program. University and Community College are the without  a doubt such different environments. As midterms are just days away the stress and anxiety are all coming in at once and the pressure to graduate within my goal are coming to a reality. My day starts of with going to Tempe Campus to taking the shuttle, which I have to admit has been my best- friend during this semester and will continue being my best friend for the following two years. I go from Tempe Campus to West Campus to Downtown Campus to finally head home. My biggest achievement while being a ASU has been able to keep up with my professors and being able to stay on track, regarding being in a whole different environment. I am currently interning with Dr. Beth who also Daisy is a part of. Everyone in the lab was extremely welcoming and helped me distinguis...

Blog Post Week 13: Arizona- Nevada

CONGRATS to Samantha & Ibrahim for winning the Arizona- Nevada state conference. The Trip was really fun yet really exhausting. It was my first time ever traveling to Nevada and it couldn't have been any better. I hope to do this experience once more. Thank You Josh and Matt who have been nothing but a great mentors and have been opening up doors for each individual and have been amazing role models.

Blog Post Week 12: ASU West Campus

This week in the Lab room each intern went to ASU West Campus for poster presentations. Though I was pretty upset that the wrong poster was printed out cause I had worked so much on my new and improved poster. But no matter which poster or not was printed "the show must go on". So I presented what I had on my poster as if it was my new one. I got the opportunity to talk to Beth who has a project on micro plastics at ASU West, and share my ideas with her. With the help of Amanda Chapman I will find ways to reach out to Beth and see if there are any opportunities left in her lab .
