S-STEM/TRAIN Scholar Jasmine Patricio

Hello, My name is Jasmine I plan on attending a community college for two years and transferring to the University of Arizona Downtown or Arizona State University where I will be working to earn my bachelor's degree in biology and continue my pursuit to being an ophthalmologist.Though I like to think that I have my future set up, I have a tendency of changing my career choice multiple of times. One thing for sure that I know is that I want to pursue my goal, in the medical field. This summer 2016 I was given the opportunity to be part of program; “STEM Internship Program” which requires every intern to put in at least 9+ hours a week to complete a total of 60 hours in one month. During my internship I was given a bacteria which had an unknown name, and through out my 60+ hours of being at Phoenix college my objective was to find out the name of our bacteria through multiple test. What I think my project will be is the continuation of purifying the Lysoszome. During the summer we didn’t have enough Lysoszome so we had to create more, the way we did that was extracting Eggwhite from a chicken egg and creating a protocol that was able to clean the egg white. In today’s meeting what we did was go over the Program and the requirements that we all have to fulfill in order to receive the full scholarship I thought the meeting was very helpful especially seeing that I was not the only one who was new to the S-Stem program. Also helped seeing some people who have done the program for over a period of time so that they can maybe help me find what I am truly interested in. What I get to get from working in the lab is get more experience in research labs and get more use to doing experiments.
