How It All Began

Why STEM ? The reason I decided on a STEM career first began with my love for science. When I was in 7 th grade our science teacher was by far the best professor I have ever met. I remember him dressing up as famous scientist and pretend that he was them and talk about his significant discovery. He made science class by far my favorite. And for the science fair he let us explore whatever we wanted, he would actually encourage us to not do the basic science experiments and helped us with whatever supplies we needed. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have been interested in the science. I grew up wanting to be an example like he was, and a great role model to the younger generation. As the years went on, and I grew more aware of what was going on in the world I realized that a lot of third world countries don’t have the amazing opportunities that we have. My goal is to teach what I know to others and spread the significance of science.

“It's not what you achieve, it's what you overcome. That's what defines your career." —Carlton Fisk Growing up in a strict Hispanic Household my siblings and I were always told that we needed to become doctors when we grew up. That if we were doctors we would have a stable bright future. So of course in High School I would tell everyone that I would grow up to be a Doctor. I didn’t know what kind of doctor, I just knew I was going to be a doctor. Once I graduated High School and enrolled at Phoenix College, I told my advisor, “I want to be on the path that will make me a doctor”. So for 2 years I was taking all my pre-requisites to be a doctor. It wasn’t until my second year at Phoenix College and almost close to graduation that I wanted to be an ophthalmologist. So I looked online and started studying for my Optometry Entrance Exam (OAT). During that Summer 2019 of pure studying I also worked with Dr. Polidoro in her environmental/ Toxicology

Hope everyone has build up good routine with school and other activities and is balancing well everything. During the following weeks I have personally build up a good routine to where I am trying to fit everything from school (Homework), work, gym and still get a good enough sleep. It first sounded impossible since I have heard so many stories of that fantasy not being real for college Students, but I have definitely tried to make it possible. This week I have decided to cut back on the amount of coffee that I drink. First week, I failed. Second week, I decided to give it another shot. I have been a whole day without coffee, and though It might not sound like a lot, personally I think it’s groundbreaking. I’ve had great advice and tips from friends and have found some replacements for coffee. I’m hoping t never have to depend on coffee if I am feeling tired.   I’ll keep you all updated on my coffee addiction. I have also decided to turn my wall int
