Blog Post August 2017

Hello everyone my name is Jasmine and this is my second year being an STEM student intern at Phoenix College. When I first started this program back in Summer 2016 I had completely no idea what type of research I was going to be doing nor did I know what research I was interested in. What I did know is that I wanted this internship so bad because my dream had always been to work in a lab. This past year has been one of the greatest experience of my college years, I would sincerely say that I have actually felt like I have completed so much in just one year at Phoenix College. Every 9 or more hours spent here in lab, have made me realize that saying you want to be a doctor/ biologic or anything science related doesn't just happen in a couple of years. You have to truly have to be dedicated and put so much effort into wanting to become your dream person. That you are willing to work twice as hard as you regularly have and study as twice as hard as you regularly do. I will be graduating next year from PC and transferring to ASU West campus. My major is Biology but to be more specific and in depth with the biology majors I have yet to know what I want to specialize in. I tend to change my mind quite a lot every time I get introduced to a new job description. What i do know now is that i want to continue working in labs and doing world wide research. I have been working with my mentor Matt on microplastics and its extractions from sediment. We are extracting the sediment from regular DI H2O, sodium chloride and one more chemical that me and Matt will develop on our own. I have been really interested in this research project because I wish to expand it and test different water lands and determine if the amount of plastic thrown into the sea could be perhaps affecting sea animals that are much more likely to get sick and lower its population. I will be around in lab mostly everyday except for the days I have Chemistry lab or Bio Lab. I am a very easy person to talk to and like meeting new people. Hope everyone enjoys their time being in lab like I have.
